The Law of Attraction and ‘Success’ – What Is ‘Success’ Anyway?!

Everyone seems to strive to be ‘successful’ in life. We all look to apply the ‘Law of Attraction’ to gain ‘success’.

But what is ‘success’? What makes you successful, and what makes you a ‘failure’?

To answer this question, let’s first take a look at our world. Our societies are completely focused on our five senses of seeing, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling. Our five senses are constantly stimulated. They are enticed and exploited all the time.

It is therefore no surprise that we tend to focus our minds on materialism 24 hours per day. We tend to focus all the time on big cars, big houses, lots of money in the bank, and so on.

There is nothing wrong with that in itself. Neither does this mean that being ‘spiritual’ equals being poor and living in a dump. That doesn’t make sense either. The problem is not with the ‘material’ objects themselves. I’ll get back to this later.

First, I’d like to know this… So many people want to ‘attract a new car’. But what is it with cars anyway? Somehow the car has become a symbol of status, of ‘success’. I know a number of people (even some well-known ones) who are so obsessed with their cars, they even give names to their car.

A friend of mine had a car and was really proud of it. He called this car ‘Infinity’. Another friend of mine doesn’t care the least bit about what kind of car he drives. Still, he needed to buy a car the other day to be able drive to work. But because he didn’t really care about it, he simply bought the first set of wheels that he liked even just a bit and of which he thought the price was right for him. “If I can drive to work and back with it, then that’s a great car for me”, he thought.

He bought himself a pretty old car to be honest. It certainly didn’t look that fancy. The other friend would have dubbed it a piece of junk. But this guy couldn’t care less. In fact, he could see the fun of it. In response to my other friend who called his car ‘Infinity’, this guy decided to give his car a name too. He called it ‘Finity’.

I kid you not, this is a true story. What it illustrates is the relativity of ‘status’ and ‘success’. What one person would consider being dignified, could be considered by the next person as pathetic.

Like I said, the trap is not with material objects themselves. These are just frequency patterns anyway. The problem comes when we see those objects as the ultimate goals and the very symbols of success that confirm whether we ‘made it’ in life or not.

It is for this reason that many people look to others to confirm to themselves if they are ‘doing well’ or if they are ‘successful’. When you don’t succeed in terms of big houses, big cars, big money, you are often considered as a ‘failure’, and often consider yourself as such.

The whole system thrives on consumption and the constant expansion of consumption, and the more we consume, the more we are considered to be ‘successful’. This even leads to many people borrowing more of what they don’t have and getting in even deeper trouble, simply to provide themselves the very things that should testify to others of their alleged ‘success’.

So is this the kind of ‘success’ you are looking for?

What if I told you that the real success you are looking for is not having all kinds of material stuff, but is actually called ‘happiness’?

After all, why would you want a lot of money, or a big house, or a big car? Why would you want others to approve of you? In the end it all comes down to a desire for a sense of security and happiness, and being able to live life on your own terms. The quest ends when you’re happy and fulfilled.

But when are you happy and fulfilled?

Here’s a hint from what a wise man once said:

“Money and fame do not happiness make.”

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with having a lot of money, or being well-known, or having big cars and big houses. These are all thought fields and are just experience. The problem is that so many people get absorbed in pursuing the material ‘dream’ that they forget about why they are doing that in the first place.

I believe it was John Harricharan who said this:

“Most people are so busy trying to make a living, they forget to make a life.”

He’s right. Most people are ‘human doings’ instead of ‘human beings’.

The funny thing is that the greatest payoff from trying to get what you want through working with the ‘Law of Attraction’ comes from a state of being. It is a state of happiness, contentment and love and gratitude for what IS that gets you what you truly want.

At any rate, the greatest payoff from your attraction efforts does certainly not come from an obsession with ever more material stuff in the merry-go-round that gets faster by the day, for the sole reason to seek approval and confirmation of your ‘success’ from others, in order to compensate for a lack of self-esteem that is the cause of this obsession to begin with.

A sense of security, self-esteem and ‘success’ is found within yourself, not outside.

And the funny thing is that once you give up the obsession with possession and finally acknowledge your true self, the person who you really are deep inside, you seem to manifest what you want much more easily.

When that happens, you can enjoy all kinds of material stuff as much as you like, if that’s what you choose. You can choose to have a big car if you like. You can choose to live in a big house if that’s what you want.

The difference is that you won’t be controlled by the never-ending pursuit of these things. You won’t be ‘on the path to happiness and success’ anymore. You would just BE happy instead, and from there you will allow things to manifest instead of chasing them forever. It’s a small difference in perception, but with profound effects.

It is then that you will start to live life, instead of life living you.

So what is ‘success’?

Success, my friend, is what you define it to be.

Now go manifest your success, whatever that is for you!

The Law of Attraction and the Ultradian Rest Response

Few things are as important to ‘attraction’ (or rather your act of ‘creation’) as what some scientists call the ‘ultradian rest response’. You may have never heard of this before, but it’s one of the keys to bringing about in your life what you want to see.

You see, there is a great difference between ‘thinking’ and ‘knowing’. Thinking is a purely intellectual activity. It mainly takes place as electrochemical processes in your body and brain.

‘Knowing’ on the other hand, transcends intellect. It is what is often called ‘intuition’. Intuition is often defined as ‘immediate knowing’, without the conscious use of reasoning. There is no sequence of thoughts following up on each other leading to an outcome. It’s just there, instantly. Bang! You suddenly get it.

“Aha!”

It appears to be stemming from a whole different source of awareness compared to the ‘rational mind’ or intellect that we tend to use so much in our lives.

In our modern societies, we find ourselves under so much pressure to ignore intuition and to rationalize everything that happens. We’d rather go with our ‘heads’ than go with our ‘hearts’. We learn that from an early age in our education system, which puts the main focus on the left part of the brain, the intellectual and analytical part.

As a consequence, if you’re like most people, you tend to ‘overrationalize’ everything. You regularly get the feeling that you want to do something, and it really makes your heart sing. But then your intellect rears its ugly head, and suppresses the ‘intuitive knowing’ you just experienced by using the limiting thoughts and emotions that have been dominating your being and thinking for long. You start to think and feel things like:

“Oh dear, who am I to think I can do that?”
“Oh my, what will my mother say?”
“Goodness, what will the boys at the bar think if I do that?”
“Dear me, my parents will get angry for not doing something with my education…”
“That can’t be right. Scientists say that this is not true. Who am I to think otherwise?”

Thoughts like this have ruled most people for all their lives and forced them into submission. The repetition that has been going on for years has created ‘habits’ to go with the ‘head’ all the time instead of the ‘heart’. The moment you have intuitive knowing and your heart starts to sing, you immediately begin to doubt it and you’re pulled back into line.

“I can’t do that, it’s not responsible. What about my job?”
“I’d love to do this, but…”
“If I could ever do this… Nah, I can’t do that. I must have gone mad.”
“What will the neighbours think?”

You’re systematically pulled in line, back to the image of artificially imposed norms of what ‘society’ or others think you are supposed to be. It is ignoring the deepest core of yourself, and the intelligence of the magnitude that you are deep inside.

When you look at it this way, it’s not a surprise that your intuition is often at odds with what you think. The intuitive knowing stems from a source that has a much greater overview, the bigger picture. It sees what the ‘knowing’ and associated action will lead to. The rational intellect always has a limited perspective that is quite likely even coloured by societal and religious ‘norms’, or ‘bad memories’ of certain events, which itself are often limited interpretations of what were actually stepping stones into a whole new reality.

Ernest Rossi, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned psychotherapist, teacher, and pioneer in the field of mind/body healing. In his book The Psychobiology of Mind/Body Healing, he describes how during an ultradian rest response your body goes into a mode that makes you more receptive to the unconscious parts of your being:

“This is the time when it is easiest to access our own intuition, your own internal imagery. Thoughts are most likely to be closer to the unconscious. This is a time when the unconscious wants all the energy it can get. If you train yourself to just watch and observe and not intrude, you are going to fall into what is called ‘reverie’ or ‘hypnagogic state’, what I call its more naturally intuitive state.”

So when do you ‘know’ instead of just ‘think’? How can you distinguish? Well, it’s largely a feeling, but Dr. Laurie Nadel gives you some hints in her book Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power:

“Do you find yourself losing concentration during certain times of the day? Perhaps it comes as a sudden touch of fatigue, or a subtle mental fuzziness. All of a sudden, you feel droopy. Your eyes may tear. You can’t stop yawning, or you sigh.Maybe you find yourself staring out the window, your mind far away from the tasks at hand. If somebody speaks to you, you find yourself startled by the sound of his voice. Or you don’t understand what was said the first time and ask the speaker to repeat himself.”

According to Dr. Nadel, these are signs that your body is entering the ultradian rest response. At times that this occurs, your body is most attuned to your intuition, as the four main regulatory systems of your body (endocrine system, autonomic nervous system, immune system and neuropeptides in your brain) align to the unconscious, greater levels of yourself.

The clearest memory that comes to mind of experiencing an ultradian rest response myself was during a final math exam back in high school. I had trouble with one of the questions and finally drooped away. It was like I temporarily switched to the realms of ‘no-time’, staring out of the window without being conscious of what was happening around me. Then suddenly some kind of realization kicked in, and I suddenly knew how to get on my way of solving the question that I didn’t seem to understand at first.

This is not something uncommon. Everyone experiences this all the time, probably daily. The trick is to recognize it. Even some of the greatest minds in modern history accepted the importance of intuition: “The only real valuable thing is intuition.” – Albert Einstein
It is by logic that we prove, but by intuition that we discover.” Henri Poincaré (one of France’s greatest mathematicians and theoretical physicists)

According to Dr. Nagel, ignoring the signals of the ultradian rest response or trying to suppress them can cause you to become irritable, uncomfortable, and even depressed. However, she emphasizes that if you allow them and flow with them, they can be moments of great inspiration. Here’s what she says:

“This is the best time to take a break rather than forcing yourself to push through the fatigue. You can think of it as your intuition break, time to take a deep breath, close your eyes, and allow impressions from your intuitive right hemisphere [right brain] to flow through your mind. You are working on a project and would like help from your intuition, this is the time to ask for it. It is also a good time to meditate.”

Meditation is not a must. All you need to do is trust your intuition and listen to your inspirations. True enough, you are blessed with an intellectual mind too. But it shouldn’t dominate your intuitive knowing and suppress it.

The thing is that ‘attraction’ doesn’t happen like things just falling out of the sky right on your lap. It often works through inspirations to do something or go somewhere. Your inspirations and hunches point you towards things you can do to bring about the changes in your life that you desire.

Ignore them, and you won’t ‘attract’ what you want. But follow along with them, and magic happens.

And finally, always realize this… ‘Intuitive knowing’ can be unique to the knower, which is you. What may feel good for you, doesn’t have to feel good for others. Everyone is unique. You will be inspired to do something that is best for you, and that matches what you want. That can be totally different from anyone else. Besides, not everyone wants the same thing, at least if everyone would follow their true ‘wants’, not the ‘wants’ imposed by the image of what others think you should want.

No one should judge or ridicule what another feels is good for him or her, as long as the person never seeks to impose anything on anyone else. That is the freedom of life we need, that will change everyone’s life radically, and the whole world with it.

Gotta go now. I feel an ultradian rest response coming in…

The Universal Laws and the Law of Attraction: What’s Love Got to Do With It?

These days you can hardly skim through self-improvement or self-help related information without hearing at least once about the Universal Laws, or the Spiritual Laws of the Universe, or other terminology indicating the same things.

Sometimes you bump into some real good, straight-to-the point, and ready-to-get-going information about how to apply these Universal Laws in our life to your advantage. However, the majority of the information you find is either too much, too detailed and/or too complex to start to apply it in your life right away. That’s usually the case. Or otherwise, it stems from people who hardly know what they’re talking about and consequently give you insufficient and sometimes even inaccurate information.

For example, many ‘experts’ merely focus on the Law of Attraction (one of the hottest buzzwords on the Internet today), without taking any other of the universal principles of life (or Universal Laws) into account. There are certain boundary conditions to the application of the Law of Attraction, and one of them is the focus of this article. It’s what I call, the Law of Love, just to stick to the popular ‘Law’-terminology.

As a result of the fact that few experts pay any attention to other universal principles besides the Law of Attraction, most people are not ‘achieving’, ‘manifesting’, or ‘attracting’ that much to be honest, no matter how hard they try.

How come? How on earth is that possible?! There’s so much information available on the subject. The Internet is flooded with it. Yet so few people actually achieving anything, let alone creating the life of their dreams?

Let me tell you why. There are usually 2 reasons for this:

1. Too much, detailed and therefore too complex information. One talks about 7 Universal Laws, another talks about 12 Laws of Success, yet another talks about 21 Subsidiary Laws or Spiritual Laws. Most people don’t know who’s right anymore. Do you? Consequently, most people either do nothing at all, or they study all different books, tapes, and movies, and start to do things of one book that work against things of the other. No results come about, and many people give up entirely and write it all off as trash or claptrap.

2. Too little information.
There can be too little information in 2 different ways. First, too little information can mean that the information given is inaccurate. This is sometimes the case. But secondly, and usually, the information given may be accurate, but is insufficient.

Often, people just focus on the Law of Attraction, but they forget that there’s a whole bunch of other universal principles (or Laws) to know about. That doesn’t mean you have to know about every single minor detail. In that case you fall for the other trap, which is the trap of too much, too detailed and too complex information.

No, you can keep things simple for yourself if you just focus on the main universal principles. By that, you automatically cover all detailed, subsidiary Laws you can think of.

So are there other Universal Laws next to the Law of Attaction then?

You can bet your sweet bippy there are!

But once again, the trick is simply to focus on the main ones to keep things simple for yourself. The Law of Attraction is one of the main Universal Laws. But there’s another one as well, one that the Law of Attraction can’t work without. This Universal Law sets the stage for the Law of Attraction to work. This Universal Law is the Universal Law of Love.

“What, you mean how I love my girl? You mean I need to do the wild thing for this stuff to work? Why didn’t you say so right away?!”

Well, before you rip off all your clothes, it’s not really that kind of love. This Law is about Universal Love. And the game of Universal Love is a whole different ballgame than the regular game of love, fancying someone and ‘getting busy’.

Universal Love happens to be the building block of all things. Universal Love is much more than emotion or feeling of fancying someone or giving them a ‘quickie’. Universal Love is the most balanced form of energy. Love is the balance of all. Love is stillness, peace of mind. The universe is Love.

This is not the time and place to get into the true nature of the Universe. For now it suffices to say that Universal Love can take on many forms. Love can be considered acceptance of yourself, or of others. Love is unconditional. Love doesn’t set terms. Love is freedom. Love is freedom for you to be who you truly are inside, not what others think you should be. Love is the freedom of others to be who they truly are inside, not what you or anyone else think they should be. Love is never to impose anything on anyone.

Read that last part again and really ponder the content. Because this is the first thing that most people seem to forget in life. Most people just walk in line, do what they’ve always been doing, think what they’ve always been thinking, and therefore get what they’ve always been getting (which they’re usually not satisfied with). Bit still, they stick to it, like they’re addicted.

And why? Because they fear the reactions of other people. They allow others to dictate how they should live their lives. These others can be parents, ‘friends’, the boys at the bar, team mates, ‘the girls’, ‘the gang’, the ‘mother-in-law’, you name it.

And at the same time, they’re doing the same themselves to others. Often even unconsciously. They just live according to the externally imposed norms of which they don’t even know the origin, and therefore they block their own uniqueness, their own potential, and thus their ability to live the life of their dreams.

After all, what is the life of your dreams? Is it living the artificial image of what others think you should be? Of course not. It’s the life of being who they truly are inside, and the happiness and abundance in any area (not least financial abundance) that come with it.

So basically, most people allow themselves to be policed by other people, and are at the same time policing other people themselves. As soon as someone starts to do something differently, something out of the artificially imposed norms, the ridicule and sometimes even physical harassment takes off, pulling the people who are about to make their unique contribution to the world back in line. That’s right, back to their robot-like existence of a daily repeated series of routines they’ve been told to be following all their lives.

Tell me something, does that sound like a balanced form of existence? Does that sound like Universal Love? Do you think the Law of Attraction will work if you don’t even allow yourself to live your life the way you want to live it? Do you think you can allow others to live their lives in the way they want it, if you can’t even allow yourself to do so? You’re doing nothing more than blocking yourself and your efforts.

You can sit on your butt watching the movie ‘The Secret‘ all the time, while waiting for a magic amount of money to suddenly appear on your bank account. But I’ll tell you upfront. That’s going to take a while.

The alternative is that you start to change your circumstances right away. You need a whole lot more Universal Love to set the stage for the Universal Law of Attraction to work. That’s what’s Love’s got to do with it!

The application of the Universal Law of Love sets the stage for the Universal Law of Attraction to work. Everything in life is unified, the universe is a whole. One Universal Law cannot work without the other. It’s a closed system. Therefore, just knowing about the Law of Attraction isn’t enough. You must know about all main Universal Laws, how they interact, and how to apply them in conjunction with each other. Focusing on the main Universal Laws is a simple thing to do. But it all starts with the application of the Universal Law of Love.

“All you need is Love” ;-)

Welcome to the Revolution.

The Universal Laws and The Universal Law of Bollocks

These days you can hardly go through any articles, books, DVDs, movies, films, documentaries with regard to self-improvement or self-help without coming across at least one mentioning of some ‘Universal Law’. Suddenly, there appears to be a Universal Law for anything. Like we haven’t got enough Laws to deal with already!

There is truth to these ‘Universal Laws’, but in most cases, a little nuance is in place. Please read along, as the remainder of this article will clear it all up.

There are Universal Laws that guide your life behind the scenes of ‘physical reality’. These are actually rather ‘universal principles of life’. That would be a more appropriate qualification.

However, the qualification of ‘Universal Law’ has taken on a life of its own. The word ‘Law’ appears to be a magic word… Almost a magic wand that casts a spell on anyone who reads it that puts them in a hypnotized state thinking that what it says must be true. After all, it’s a ‘Law’ isn’t it? A ‘Law’ is always right. No more thinking required.

Today, subjects like the ‘Law of Attraction’ are at an all-time high of popularity. We’ve got the movie ‘The Secret‘ and a whole big bunch of people trying to leverage on it by proclaiming themselves as ‘experts in the field of the Law of Attraction’, or ‘masters of attraction’. Yes, there’s that magic word (wand) again.

And simply because people seem to like ‘Universal Laws’, every now and then a new ‘Universal Law’ makes its entrance. People come up with new ‘Universal Laws’ all the time. And likewise, new ‘experts on the Law of Attraction’ and ‘masters of attraction’ proclaim themselves every day.

Yet despite so many people having seen the movie ‘The Secret‘ and knowing about the Law of Attraction, there is only a very, very small number of people who are actually living the life of their dreams, or ‘attracting their desires’, or ‘manifesting their dreams’. Yes those are some other ‘magic words’ from today’s common terminology.

How come? How come, with all that knowledge, with all those ‘Universal Laws’ already written and told about, and with all those new ‘Universal Laws’, ‘Spiritual Laws of the Universe’, ‘Subsidiary Laws’ and so on coming about each and every day on the Internet and elsewhere… How come that all the people buying those books, DVDs, movies, films, documentaries, and so on, are still not ‘attracting their desires’ or ‘manifesting their dreams’?

I’ll tell you why. Most people have heard something about it, but have no real knowledge about the matter. They are aware of the fact that there are ‘Universal Laws’, or rather ‘universal principles of life’ that work behind the scenes and guide the courses of their lives.

However, most people have lost track, because so many who think they know what they’re talking about (while they don’t) come up with these new ‘Universal Laws’ all the time. There may be some truth to all these different ‘Universal Laws’. But what they really do for genuine seekers for the truth like yourself is not much more than making things way too difficult and complex to apply.

And if that isn’t enough already, often another big problem comes up when you start reading about the ‘Law of Attraction’ and the ‘Laws of the Universe’. The ‘experts’ who speak or write about them tend to do that in such an overly symbolic fashion, that few well-thinking people can make any practical sense of it. What you find is nothing but ‘enigmas wrapped in riddles’.

Listen, there are universal principles of life. ‘Universal Laws’ if you will. However, when it comes to applying them to your advantage, we are in desperate need for some clarity.

Let me show you what I mean. I can come up with hundreds of ‘Universal Laws’ if I want. Here’s a couple of them…

Introducing the Universal Law of Ping Pong
It says you have to use ping pong balls if you want to play table tennis.

Introducing the Universal Law of Rain
It says that when it rains, things get wet.

Disappointing, eh? But they did sound interesting at first, right?

See what’s happening here? The mere qualification of ‘Universal Law’ makes the statement sound interesting already, while the true deeper meaning of the ‘Universal Law’ is nothing more than a standard, blindingly obvious platitude.

So let me give you another Universal Law right now, to satisfy your probably insatiable need (or so you may think) for knowledge of all ‘Universal Laws’ to improve your life, ‘attract your desires’, and ‘manifest your dreams’ once and for all:

Introducing the Universal Law of Bollocks
It says that it’s all bollocks.

That’s right, it’s all bollocks. Bollocks! There are universal principles guiding your life. If you want, you can call them ‘Universal Laws’. I’ve done so in my books and articles, because that’s what people are looking for these days. If I would apply other terminology, people would never even be looking at it. Simply because they think they need ‘Laws’.

But it’s all bollocks, because before this whole game we call ‘human life’ started, we didn’t get an instruction manual on how life was supposed to be lived. We didn’t get a Code of Law full of ‘thou shalt nots’. The purpose of the whole thing was to find out the universal principles and realize that through applying these principles, YOU can have full control over whatever it is you want to create. The purpose of the whole thing was to find out that the world ‘outside’ is only a mirror showing what’s going on ‘inside’. All this time, the whole thing has been about finding out that you create your reality experience yourself.

Yes, that’s right, you ‘create’, which is much more than ‘attracting’. But that’s something you’ll discover as you get more experienced in the conscious living of your life and in the engineering your own success by applying the true and simple universal principles of life.

Or yes, ‘Laws’ if you will.

What you call ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are qualifications of your own. You are the one who deems things to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’. That’s merely a judgment from your individual perspective. When you’re not satisfied with your reality experience, you need to create something else that you are satisfied with.

For many, this is where the Law of Attraction comes in. According to most, this one states that what you focus your thoughts on becomes your reality. There’s truth to this statement, but there’s more to the story. Positive thinking and visualizing aren’t going to cut it. There are certain boundary conditions to take into account, certain ‘universal principles of life’. Without attending to these conditions, your attraction efforts will be sabotaged. And this is exactly what most people who have seen ‘The Secret‘ and have tried to put the ‘Law of Attraction’ into practice are experiencing.

But the last thing you need are instructions that are either overly symbolic, or too complex to apply. What you want to keep things simple and straightforward. Or else you may get lost in the details. You want just enough straightforward knowledge for simple application of the principles, while still having a total view on the big picture that is comprehensive enough to not forget about any universal principle, or Law for that matter.

If you want to make life simple for yourself, to start pulling the right strings at once to create the life and destiny of your dreams, then don’t waste another second on trying to find out every small, detailed, insignificant ‘Universal Law’ someone came up with today. You’ll be like a cat chasing its own tail: a never-ending story that leaves you exhausted and depressed.

Neither should you merely think positive thoughts and then wait for things to happen. There’s a little more to it. Just a little, nothing complex, but still extremely important.

Just keep it simple. There are 6 main Universal Principles (or Laws) that cover all universal principles automatically. Attend to them all, which is a simple thing to do without much effort required, and you’ll be off living more than your dreams before you can even consciously realize you created such an incredible experience!

Keep it straightforward and easy-to-apply. The game of life wasn’t intended to be complex and difficult. The game was supposed to be simple and easy, and most of all FUN!

And there’s a simple road to it, and it’s just a small decision away.

Welcome to the Revolution.

The Additional Secret of The Movie ‘The Secret’

The past few years, with an absolute peak in 2006 as the movie ‘The Secret‘ was exposed to hundreds of thousands, an ever growing number of people is slowly waking up to the knowledge that there may just be more to life than the often robot-like existence of daily routines they lead.

With movies like ‘The Secret‘ and ‘What the Bleep Do We Know‘, and books like ‘The Attractor Factor‘ by Joe Vitale and the resurfacing of ‘The Law of Success‘ by Napoleon Hill, people increasingly realize that they can have much more success in life, if only they knew ‘the secret’ that all these sources talk about.

Still, although hundreds of thousands of people have seen the movie ‘The Secret‘, why are so few people living their ultimate lifestyle? Why aren’t all those people living the success they long for so bad? The success that all these movies promise them? Is there an additional secret to movies like ‘The Secret‘?

The obvious answer is ‘yes’. If there weren’t, every person having seen the movie ‘The Secret‘ would be living the lifestyle of their dreams, would be ‘attracting’ everything they long for, and would be ‘manifesting’ everything they desire into their lives ‘without any conscious effort’.

At least, isn’t that what you would think after watching movies like ‘The Secret‘?

Let me tell you what the problem is, what is also the cause of so many people still not achieving their desires and dreams, and what is also the additional ‘secret’ or ‘edge’ to the movie ‘The Secret‘ and others. The problem rests in a psychological phenomenon called ‘selective retention‘.

In simple terms, ‘selective retention’ means that you only remember the things you want to hear. In other words, you filter out the things you’d rather not hear. Let’s relate this to the contents of movies like ‘The Secret‘ and other films and books with regard to this subject.

What we can agree upon is that all these movies like ‘The Secret‘ and books like ‘The Attractor Factor‘ are about a Universal Law called ‘The Law of Attraction‘. According to the Law of Attraction, you can supposedly attract and manifest anything you want or desire into your life, based on what you focus your thoughts.

That’s the secret, according to the movie ‘The Secret‘.

What I can tell you upfront is that the Law of Attraction is real, but only to an extent. There are very important nuances to its application, which movies like ‘The Secret‘ either don’t tell you about, or which you filter out through the psychological process of ‘selective retention’.

The actual nuances and details of the application of the Law of Attraction are a subject to be discussed at another time and another place. For now, it’s important to realize and acknowledge the one thing that most people are missing from movies like ‘The Secret‘ and the whole range of other products dealing with the Law of Attraction.

You see, movies and books dealing with the Law of Attraction often overemphasize the word ‘effortless’. You are led to believe that you can attract things and manifest things into your life without any conscious effort from your side.

Quite likely, ‘effortless’ is exactly what you want to hear. Who wouldn’t like to do nothing while bringing about the most profound changes? People are hardly ever satisfied with their circumstances, so they desire change.

However, although they desire change, at the same time they resist change. Sounds like a paradox, but it’s true. Because as soon as any effort is required to actually make the change they desire come about, or to overcome the resistance experienced to make that change come about, people ‘cop out’. Do you recognize that?

Maybe you do, or maybe you don’t. But that’s exactly why so many people don’t achieve any success, although they’ve seen the movie ‘The Secret‘ and supposedly know about ‘the secret’.

Through their ‘selective retention’, the only thing that they remember and engrain is that ‘no effort is required’, and they filter out the part that says they should actually take inspired action. As a consequence, many people think that if they just think positively and try to focus on positive emotions most of the time, everything they desire will magically manifest into their lives while they’re sitting on the couch watching movies like ‘The Secret‘ and ‘What the Bleep Do We Know‘.

They think suddenly some distanced relative they never heard of before in their lives, will leave them a legacy of millions of dollars while they’re eating potato chips and ice cream, as they keep on watching the movie ‘The Secret‘.

Or they visualize themselves as a Scrooge McDuck-equivalent, swimming around in a pool of money. Perhaps they include the Money Bin too. And they expect a big bag of money to fall out the sky.

As a side-effect, they get bigger and unhealthier, and more and more miserable because nothing happens to make their lives better. Apparently, even a movement has come about that believes that you can apply the Law of Attraction to create a body they’ve always dreamed about. They think they’ll look lean and muscular without effort through ‘attracting’ their dream bodies by visualizing how they want to look. I kid you not.

Let’s reintroduce some common sense. Butt sitting never got anyone anywhere. The Law of Attraction that the movie ‘The Secret‘ and other sources are about is real, but to reap its benefits and seize its fruits, you need to know how to apply it in your life, and you need to know the nuances to its application.

You can’t just start thinking positive thoughts and feeling positive emotions and wait for all your desires to magically pop up while doing nothing. That’s the missing link to achieving your success from the knowledge of the movie ‘The Secret‘ and other films and books. The true secret is ‘inspired action’.

Doing nothing doesn’t help you. You need to act. You can get clear on your intention and then go do something else to get your mind off it. It’s during those moments of ‘silence’, the moments that you’re not obsessed with what you want, that you suddenly get ideas, inspirations, hunches and so on. You must act on those inspirations.

The ‘act of acting’ alone will make you turn on the switch of the Law of Attraction, so to speak. Then, through an interplay of other Universal Laws that the movie ‘The Secret‘ and a whole range of books on the Law of Attraction forget to mention, the Universe will start rearranging itself according to your thoughts, emotions and actions. You’ll get new ideas, meet new people, stumble upon new knowledge, and so on, all of which you can use in your actions that lead you to your envisioned goal step by step, through a chain of events.

And that’s how the changes you desire come about.

Your job is to recognize what exactly to act upon. For that, you need to know exactly how the Law of Attraction works in reality, in conjunction with other Universal Laws, and how things actually manifest into your life so you actually recognize your opportunities. There’s not a great number of other Universal Laws, only a few main Universal Laws that automatically cover all minor and subsidiary Universal Laws.

By understanding the nuances of the application of the Law of Attraction in conjunction with some few other universal principles (or Laws) as boundary conditions, you can make all your dreams come true. You just need to overcome your ‘selective retention’ and acquire the knowledge of just the few additional nuances you must understand to really achieve the things that the movie ‘The Secret‘ and others talk about.

True enough, it does require some effort, but by applying these Laws correctly you make the Universe work with you, instead of against you. And as you ‘get the hang’ of this application, the conscious effort required from you will keep on decreasing.

But you’ll always need to act. Nothing is going to happen if you don’t act. That’s the additional secret to the movie ‘The Secret‘. You just need to learn how to bring those inspirations about, how to recognize them, and then what to act upon.

And there are simple ways to do that.

An Inside Look at The Brain

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened — as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding — she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another. Also discussed is the different way our left brain perceives reality vs. the way our right brain perceives reality.

Denying the Self

As I wade through all of the writings and findings in the fields of science and spirituality, there is one belief that remains strong in me: there is, at the beginning and at the end, no inherent “self”. This has been the most difficult truth for me to come to terms with; alas, it seems to be the truth that the majority of us have the most problem with accepting. Denying the self, from our individualistic point view, seems to be to deny our very existence.

My belief, and a belief that is the foundation of many spiritual movements, is that there is no true self because we are all made up of the same stuff; the way that our brain perceives the stimuli around it gives us a false sense of individualism. I believe the universe to work as a layered mechanism with space-time, mass and matter and consciousness laying one on top of the other so that the whole of each comes into contact with the whole of both others. To say this is to imply that a rock has as much consciousness as I do; it simply doesn’t have the biological makeup to know it.

I exemplify this point of view when I discuss with my wife and family by taking three separate sheets of paper and holding them flat together between my open palms, moving them slowly against one another. Each sheet of paper represents the three “dimensions” (I use the word loosely) to the universe as I believe it exists: space-time, mass and matter and consciousness. The pool of consciousness that gives us the ability to be aware of the fact that we are aware exists in all things sentient and non-sentient that we see around us.

None of this is meant to take away from the fantastical fact that single-celled organisms managed to evolve into beings with a neurological system that allows them to perceive the world around them and to know it; whether one believes that our awareness comes from a pool or a monotheistic god, there is no denying our biological greatness. It does mean, however, that in order to continue along our path towards the best enlightenment that we can achieve, we have to give up our sense of self innately and begin to realize that everything and everyone around us are as native to our awareness as we ourselves are.

More on the steps you can take as you shift your worldview to help to ease the change tomorrow.

Worldview & Perception

The more I study the subatomic world of quantum physics, the more I realize that we are all the same, small parts of the one universe. Despite the sure solidity that this evokes in me, I always come back to this question: if we are all made fundamentally of the same, why do we feel so separate? That really would be anyone’s guess; here are mine:

The only reason that we live in such a fragmented world is because we have a fragmented worldview. People often made a point early in their lives to commit to a particular worldview and hold on for dear life and, as individuals, this means that we will (and obviously have) always disagreed on some fundamental issues.

Consider the story of the Native American chief and Christopher Columbus. Legend has it that the chief looked out to the water for several days noticing ripples and waves that he couldn’t explain in open and otherwise calm waters. Finally, after several days of this, sailing ships began to come into view and it became obvious that they were causing the disturbance. Christopher Columbus and the crew of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria landed shortly thereafter. It has been speculated that perhaps the chief reported an inability to see the ships simply because the ships exceeded the limitations of his worldview to such a degree that his brain and senses needed time to adapt.

No need to take that story seriously; just think of it as an analogy. What could we begin to see if we opened our minds to the possibility?

A second and more scientific theory is that, given that our brain takes in 40 billion bits of information per second and processes only 2000, our brains are simply limited by their biology. We see everything, every possibility, and our brains (due to biology and a closed mind within) simply chooses to ignore the things that exceed the limits of our own collective worldview. 2000 out of 40 billion – just imagine.

Given that second theory, I think that it is likely that, in the light of further technological advances and scientific discoveries, there will be a very large-scale paradigm shift within the next 50 years. Would that paradigm shift allow us to perceive more of the true reality of nature than we do now? Would that necessarily be a good thing?

Does Consciousness Require or Determine Time?

Ask yourself that question: does consciousness require time in order to exist, or does consciousness actually dictate our perception of time? It has occurred to me that perhaps time requires and even dictates, to some finite extent, what we perceive as consciousness. I believe quite firmly that “consciousness” itself is something outside of time and space, but that doesn’t mean that one doesn’t possibly relate directly to the other.

It is important to distinguish between the time that we know exists in four-dimensional spacetime and the time that we perceive to exist via consciousness. Maybe I’ll coin a term here – time as we perceive it should be called psytime. Give me my Nobel Prize! :D

Measuring Consciousness

Under the theory that consciousness will actually be measurable by some future scientific method (I believe that it might), is it really a stretch to theorize that, given the ability to quantify, consciousness could eventually be observed “leaving” the body in some form upon the death of a human being? Measurement of this sort could lend credence to the idea of reincarnation, true death of consciousness or even ascension.
