Africa in Perspective

Earth Issues,Geography       Trackback

Take a long, hard look at the map below – I certainly did the first time I saw it. Africa is the least developed continent on our planet and the most ravaged by poverty and disease. Malnuriousment, abhorrent living conditions and the AIDS virus all run rampant here yet we only seem to hear about it when we accidentally catch the odd infomercial or when Bono heads up a new initiative. All this despite the fact that Africa is positively huge, much bigger geographically than many of the world’s more known regions.

I hate to burst your bubble on this, as I’ve read several of your other articles and enjoyed them thoroughly, but this is comparing countries to a continent (except europe). Africa is a continent with countries within it, just like north america is a continent with countries within it.

Most continents (ex. australia) are about the same size, given africa may have a bigger total land mass, this image is still not a very good representation of the message it’s trying to convey, at least not to someone like me.

I still do see the point, and it is true and prominent, but not everyone is as understanding to subtle mistakes in campaigns such as this.

In all reality though, no matter how you compare it, be it this way, historically, etc. Africa just really has bad luck, I’d say anyways, it’s just in a really good nesting ground for bad shit to happen. You can even, in a way, follow it along a horizontal line along the planet, whatever place happens to be in that tropical/desert zone seems to fester with suck. For example, many pacific islands, much of south america, anything between southern china and australia, they all tend to have a lot of problems/sicknesses/low pop. due to one reason or another. Africa just happened to have a lot of land mass with a lot of people so all of these bad things spread through it like wildfire in a drought ridden forest of pinetrees.
